"Booty-Shakin' Foot-Stompin Newgrass"
... is a good one line description, but our music is a little hard to describe due to it's style-blending qualities....For example: Reggae and Bluegrass can be combined to make "Reggrass"! Similarly we could be playing "Funk-Grass" or combining anything to make it something-GRASS!!! The grass part comes from our predominantly acoustic sound and strong syncopation played with traditional instruments. The other part of our grass sound places a strong emphasis on three-part harmonies a la CSN or something that you'ld hear on a Del McCoury or a Nashville Ramblers recording....
We aren't a "jam band" per se, although we frequently ride the music to new places through improvisation and solos. But, unlike your typical jam band, we can also play concisely and supportively of each other when the music calls for it. We play about 50% Bluegrass tunes which pay a strong homage to Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers and The Seldom Scene.
Much of our repetoire however, was never even remotely Bluegrass to start with. Phish, The Doors, Sublime and The Allman Brothers can all be interpreted through the genre of "Newgrass" (traditional instruments playing non-traditional songs). Mix in a dose of blues, funk, psychedelic folk, rock (college and classic),and vintage country, and our sound rounds out nicely. Our minds are open to experimentation. We're NOT your ordinary Bluegrass band. |
